Luke 10:38-42 (New Living Translation)

38 As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39 Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. 40 But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”
41 But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! 42 There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Cleaning house is something I have always enjoyed! There is great satisfaction when I am finished, just looking around and being thankful first of all for what God has entrusted to us, next is being physically able to do it. For me it is not entertaining, but hospitality. John and I love for people to visit! We look forward to family and friends stopping by for coffee or a meal. It is such a blessing to share our home with folks. Now if you know me, preparation is a really big thing. I think about Mary and Martha and what was important to them. Martha was overly concerned, and Mary just wanted to sit at the feet of Jesus. In the past, I have to admit to being a "Martha", wanting everything to be perfect and in the process missing out on a lot of fellowship. Now, I am so thankful because I realize the time we have is short, and all these material things we think are so important has its place. Jesus must come first! When we are at the feet of Jesus, we are given strength and direction. It is a place of rest and peace. Mary and Martha both loved Jesus so much, its just sometimes we can forget where we need to be. We should strive to be more like Mary, but still make sure everyone will be blessed when they come to visit. I believe when we open our homes and receive family and friends, God is pleased! Being worried and upset over all the details takes away from what Mary discovered would never be taken away from her. Next time you have guests, remember to put Jesus first and have a wonderful visit!
